Easy Ways to Transform Your Home This Year

January 7, 2026 by The Brownstone Boys

A new year has a way of making us look at our homes with fresh eyes. What once felt fine might suddenly feel a little tired, a little flat, or just not quite right anymore. The good news? Transforming your space doesn’t have to mean a full renovation or a massive budget. Some of the most impactful changes are also the simplest, and they’re often the ones that make your home feel better to live in every single day.

If you’re looking for easy, approachable ways to refresh your home this year, these updates pack the biggest punch.

A cozy living room with deep purple walls, built-in shelves holding books and plants, a curved sofa with assorted pillows, and a round hanging paper lamp.

Change the Lighting (Warm Light Is Everything)

If there’s one thing we always notice when we walk into a space, it’s the lighting. Harsh, cool bulbs can make even the most beautiful room feel sterile, while warm lighting instantly adds depth, softness, and a sense of calm.

Start by swapping out bulbs for warm light, generally in the 2700K range. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference, especially in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. From there, think about layering your lighting: table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and even picture lights all help create a more lived-in, inviting feel. Overhead lighting has its place, but it should rarely be the only source of light in a room.

If you are looking for some warm light bulbs, there are our absolute favorites for indoor usage:

Beonllay LED Light Bulbs 40 Watt

LED Light Bulb G25G80 Dim to Warm

LED Large Globe Oversized Bulb

And as for outdoor light bulbs, we have only one favorite which is the TORCHSTAR Dusk to Dawn Light Bulbs Outdoor.

If you are looking for a new floor or table lamp to give your space new live, here are some recommendations:

Duchamp Floor Lamp from Rejuvenation has a simple and sleek silhouette that can work in a living room, bedroom, or home office.

Larkin Stacked Wood Floor Lamp from Pottery Barn has a whimsical and fun design that will add some personality to any room.

Shiloh Table Lamp from west elm is the perfect midcentury modern touch to a home.

The Eloise Scallop Milk Glass Table Lamp from Anthropologie is a personal favorite of ours.

Experiment with Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper or Paint (Don’t Forget the Ceiling)

Walls and ceilings are often the biggest blank canvases in our homes, and updating them can completely shift how a space feels. Peel-and-stick wallpaper has come a long way and is a great option if you want to experiment with pattern, texture, or color without a long-term commitment. It works especially well in smaller spaces like powder rooms, entryways, or bedrooms where you can be a little bolder. Check out our collection of renter-friendly peel-and-stick wallpaper with WallPops!

Paint is another powerful tool and one that’s often underutilized. A fresh coat of paint can redefine a room, but don’t stop at the walls. Painting the ceiling, whether it’s the same color as the walls or a complementary shade, can make a space feel more intentional and enveloping. It’s a simple move that instantly elevates a room from basic to considered. If you are looking for some paint color inspiration, we rounded up our favorite colors for you!

A bathroom with white subway tiles, patterned floor, a white toilet, black sink, shower with a patterned curtain, wooden window shutters, potted plants, and striped wallpaper.

Add Thoughtful Textiles

Textiles are what make a house feel like a home. They soften spaces, add warmth, and introduce color and pattern in a way that feels personal rather than permanent.

Investing in high-quality bedding can completely change how your bedroom feel, and how you feel in it. Crisp sheets, a substantial duvet, and layered pillows turn an everyday routine into something more restorative. Here are some of our favorite bedding options:

Luxe Sateen Core Sheet Set from Brooklinen come in great colors and get comfier with each wash, making them pleasant to the eye and a joy to sleep in.

Classic Percale Sheets from Brooklinen are ideal for hot sleepers as these are cool and lightweight.

European Linen Deluxe Bedding Bundle from Quince is a great budget-friendly option that gives your bed a lived-in and cozy look.

A bedroom in our house with a black metal bed frame, pillows and blankets, floral wallpaper, green wainscoting, and framed art on the walls. Two sconces and a small bedside table with flowers complete the cozy space.

In living spaces, throw pillows and rugs do the heavy lifting. A well-chosen rug can anchor a room, while pillows are an easy way to bring in texture and seasonal color. Our rug collection with NuStory has the perfect rug for any room in your home.

The key is quality over quantity. Fewer, better pieces will always feel more elevated and intentional than a pile of things that don’t quite work together.

Explore Facebook Marketplace for One-of-a-Kind Finds

Some of the most character-filled pieces in our homes didn’t come from a showroom. In our Parlor 2.0, we incorporated lots of Facebook Marketplace pieces which make our home feel especially unique. Facebook Marketplace is an incredible resource for finding furniture, vintage lighting, and unexpected accents often at a fraction of the cost. It’s also a great way to bring in pieces that feel layered and collected rather than brand new and predictable.

When scrolling, think in terms of potential rather than perfection. A solid wood table might just need refinishing, or a dated lamp could be transformed with a new shade. Mixing these secondhand finds with newer pieces adds depth and tells a more personal story, one that can’t be replicated.

As we head into a new year, think of your home as something that can evolve with you. Small, thoughtful updates can have a lasting impact, and often, they’re the changes you feel the most. Sometimes, transformation isn’t about starting over. It’s about refining what’s already there and making it work better for the way you live now.

Our Winter Clothing Essentials

December 19, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

Winter dressing is all about finding pieces that work as hard as we do, layers that feel intentional, materials that hold up to cold city days, and silhouettes that move seamlessly from job sites to meetings, dinners, and everything in between. When we’re building a winter wardrobe, we look for timeless staples with thoughtful details, clothes that feel just as good worn casually at home as they do styled for a day out. These are the brands and pieces we keep coming back to when the temperature drops.

Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder is our go-to for polished winter pieces that still feel easy to wear. From cozy knits to statement outerwear, everything strikes that balance between classic and modern. Their flannels feel right at home on renovation days, while tailored trousers and outerwear easily carry us into meetings or date night. These are investment pieces we wear on repeat all winter.

Donegal Cashmere Turtleneck: The cozy, yet sleek, look of this turtleneck is perfect for both work from home or days full of meetings in the city.

Boiled Wool Full-Zip Sweater Jacket: This simple but retro feeling jacket is the perfect for layering with any shirt.

Portuguese Flannel Shirt: We’re home renovators… we love a nice flannel.

Italian Casentino Upland Coat: If you were to modernize a hunter jacket, that is this, and we could not be more obsessed.

Italian Wool-Alpaca Car Coat: Guaranteed warmth on cold NYC winter days.

Straight Japanese Selvedge Stretch Jean in Worn Indigo: Perfect everyday jean that aren’t too slim nor relaxed.

Italian Flannel Striped Hollywood Trouser: Date night pant of choice during winter.

A flat lay of men's clothing items including grey trousers, a grey coat, a navy zip-up sweater, a speckled turtleneck, dark jeans, and a red plaid button-up shirt on a beige background.

Buck Mason

Buck Mason excels at well-made basics that feel broken-in from the start. This is where we stock up on layering essentials, flannels, and outerwear that can handle real life (and real job sites). The silhouettes feel timeless with just enough vintage influence. Functional, comfortable, and endlessly wearable.

Vintage Thermal Henley: Our favorite for layering.

Cabinessence Flannel Camp Shirt: Another flannel that we love because you can never have too many flannels as a home renovator. It’s our job site uniform basically.

California Cashmere Polo: Ideal for winter, but we love wearing this all throughout the year.

Felted Shawl Coat: Perfect to throw on when you need to run down the street to grab coffee or something from the bodega.

Thundercloud Quilted Bomber Jacket: Obsessed with the design of this jacket.

Cloudloom Cotton Wool Romeo Pant: The perfect vintage touch to your work or date night look.

Craftsman Corduroy Ford Standard Jean:A pant that will go with any outfit.

Boondocker Boot: Designed for functionality.

A collection of men's clothing including an olive green puffer jacket, a beige henley shirt, brown trousers, grey jeans, and a dark grey button-up jacket, arranged on a flat background.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie has become a reliable source for cozy, everyday winter staples. Their knits, hoodies, and outerwear are easy to layer and perfect for cold-weather routines. These are the pieces we reach for on walks, quick errands, or slow weekends at home. Comfortable, versatile, and no-fuss.

A&F Essential Crew Sweater: Feels like a warm hug in the winter.

Essential Popover Hoodie: Perfect for layering during winter walks in Prospect Park or walks to the gym.

Wool-Blend Double-Breasted Coat: Simple, warm, and everything you could ask for from a long winter coat.

A&F Aircloud Mockneck Puffer: Our favorite for when it is snowing.

YPB neoKNIT MAX Relaxed Straight Bottom: For when the workday is over and we are ready to sit back and watch some TV.

Boucle Cardigan: You can wear it with sweatpants or a nice pair of trousers. Versatility at its finest.

New York Yankees ‘47 Clean-Up Hat: Need we say more?

A collection of clothing items arranged on a green background, including a brown puffer jacket, black coat, white hoodie, black pants, green cardigan, maroon beanie, and navy baseball cap.

Madewell Mens

Madewell nails timeless essentials that only get better with wear. Their denim is a standout, paired perfectly with classic knits and outerwear. These are the kind of pieces that work for both casual days and dressed-up moments. Simple, dependable, and seasonless.

The 1991 Loose Straight Jean: Nobody does jeans like Madewell…

Sweater Polo in Heritage Merino Wool: The simple polo your closet has been asking for.

Leather Flight Jacket: Whether it is nice dinner out in the city or running errands, a leather jacket will have always have you covered.

How to Choose the Right Sofa (and 12 We Love at Every Price Point)

October 22, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

A sofa isn’t just another piece of furniture, it’s the anchor of your living room, the spot where you unwind, entertain, and maybe even take the occasional nap. Finding the right one means balancing comfort, style, scale, and budget. Whether you’re furnishing your first apartment or refreshing your forever home, here’s how to make the right choice, plus a few favorites for every price range.

What to Consider Before You Shop

  • Measure your space:  Before you fall in love with a sofa online, grab a tape measure. Pay attention to both the room size and how the sofa will relate to entryways, windows, and walkways.
  • Think about how you live: If you host often, consider a sectional. If your space is tight, a compact two-seater or loveseat might be perfect. And if you have pets or kids, performance fabrics are your best friend.
  • Balance comfort and silhouette: Low, deep seats feel lounge-y and relaxed, while more structured sofas with higher backs give a tailored, traditional look. Think about your posture and how you like to sit — it’s the difference between sinking in or sitting up.

Under $1,000: Affordable & Apartment-Friendly

You don’t have to sacrifice style for budget. These pieces deliver clean lines, comfort, and solid craftsmanship at an accessible price point.

A Modern Take on Fall Decorating: Cozy, Collected, and Timeless

October 17, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

When you enter your home on a crisp fall evening, it should feel like stepping into a warm embrace, one that’s intentional, layered, and thoroughly lived-in. The trick isn’t to plaster the place with pumpkins, but to bring in elements that whisper of the season through texture, light, and a sophisticated nod to nature.

Here’s how we’d approach it along with a handful of curated pieces to help bring the vision to life.

Shop Our Fall Decor Favorites

Layered Textiles: Throws, Rugs & Subtle Pattern

One of the simplest ways to pivot your home into fall mode is with textiles. A lush throw casually folded over a sofa or draped across a bench can do more than a dozen small decor accents. Choose rich weaves, tactile surfaces, or monochrome patterns that read as elegant rather than thematic.

  • The West Elm Luxe Chenille Throw is a wonderful pick: soft, substantial, and full of depth.
  • For something with a hint of more visual interest, try the Sferra Celine Throw, with its brushed cotton herringbone weave and natural fringe.
  • If velvet or faux fur is your kind of luxe, the Anthropologie “The Sophie” Faux‑Fur Throw Blanket adds a dramatic but still elegant touch.
  • We also love the Lambswool Plaid Throw from Schoolhouse for adding fall colors to a room.

Underfoot, you might look for a rug in a muted, earthy palette — a wool kilim or a handwoven jute with subtle patterning.

  • The Parlor Rug from our collection with NuStory in Ochre or Brick adds a perfect fall color palette to any room.
  • We also love this rug from Chris Love Julia’s collection with Loloi.

Sculptural Accents & Vase Moments

Instead of seasonal knickknacks, think of your accents as sculptural punctuation. A single strong object or a thoughtful cluster of vases makes more impact than a crowded display.

  • A standout is Terrain’s glass pumpkin, it’s still a nod to fall, but in a refined, amber-glass execution.
  • If you prefer neutral forms, Pottery Barn Eclectic Woven Pumpkin is a subtle sculptural object that reads more design-forward than seasonal.
  • For those who like having a tray for their trinkets or keys, the Oblong Valet Tray from 2Modern is favorite of ours.

You can also lean into taller vessels (smoky glass, clay, glazed ceramics) to hold a few branches, dried hydrangea, or preserved foliage. The idea is to let the architecture (moldings, mantels, built-ins) remain the hero, with decor supporting, not competing.

  • We love the CB2 Tuck Large Amber Vase against original woodwork.
  • To add some European warmth and patina to your space, 1stDibs has great antique olive jars.
  • If you want to add a pop of color to your home, the Maude Sculptural Vase from Anthropologie is a great choice.

Warm Ambient Light & Candle Layers

Fall is as much about how your home feels in light as in shadow. Swap in warmer bulbs, lower overheads, and let candlelight reign. Cluster candles of varying heights on a tray or raised pedestal. Choose vessels of smoky glass, soft brass, or matte ceramics.

  • The Teig Table Lamp from Schoolhouse is a perfect warm light with a lot of personality.
  • We love having taper candles in our home during the fall and using a brass taper holder adds the perfect warmth.
  • With notes of rosemary, sage, and salt, the Climbing Tuscan Rosemary candle from Flamingo Estates fills the room with earthy warmth and comes in a vessel beautiful enough to display year-round.
  • The P.F. Candle bundles are a great way to layer scent and light. The amber glass jars echo the warm tones of fall without feeling overly seasonal.

Fall decorating is less about overt seasonal motifs and more about creating a home that feels warm, layered, and timeless. A soft glow, a textured throw, or a sculptural vase can transform a space, letting your architecture and design shine. This season, embrace quiet touches that invite comfort and style, so your home feels as cozy as it is collected. You can shop all of our fall decor favorites here.

Fall Style Essentials

October 8, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

There’s something about fall in Brooklyn that makes us want to elevate our wardrobes, the crisp air, the soft light, the endless layering potential. Fall feels like a reset, a chance to lean into texture, quality, and craftsmanship in the same way we approach our design projects. We’re drawn to timeless silhouettes, earthy palettes, and pieces that strike the perfect balance between effortless and intentional. Here are four brands we’re loving this season, each one bringing a little style inspiration to our favorite time of year.

SEE OUR FALL STYLE ESSENTIALS

Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder’s collections are the definition of modern American menswear, refined, versatile, and just the right amount of rugged. We’re loving the Italian Bouclé Shawl Cardigan layered over a crisp tee, the Italian Wool Double-Breasted Topcoat for a tailored finish, and the Japanese Selvedge Denim for those off-duty days. The Chelsea Boots in Leather round out the look, sleek enough for a dinner reservation but tough enough for city sidewalks. We also love the Italian Sherpa Chore Coat for chilly mornings at job sites.

Carhartt

When we’re on renovation sites, we need pieces that can handle real work while still looking good. That’s why Carhartt is a staple in our fall rotation. The Detroit Jacket has that iconic, broken-in structure we can’t get enough of, the Force Relaxed Fit Pants are built to last (and still flattering), and the Rain Defender Loose Fit adds the perfect layer of warmth for chilly days.

Dickies

When it comes to workwear that’s stood the test of time, Dickies is the real deal. We love how their classics have evolved from job site essentials to everyday staples. The Eisenhower Jacket has a perfect boxy fit that feels vintage but current, the 874 Work Pants are tough yet tailored, and the Heavyweight Long Sleeve Henley Tee is one of those simple basics we keep in rotation all season long. Durable, affordable, and effortlessly cool, Dickies brings authentic workwear energy into our Brooklyn fall wardrobe.

Quince

For timeless staples without the designer price tag, Quince has become one of our go-tos. Their Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater feels luxe but comes in under $100, and the Organic Cotton Oxford Shirt is one of those wear-anywhere pieces that layers effortlessly under a jacket. We’re also eyeing the Suede Bomber Jacket for that polished yet easy weekend look. Quince proves that high-quality, well-designed menswear doesn’t have to come with a luxury price tag,  it’s approachable, classic, and just right for fall.

How to Instantly Elevate a Room with Wallpaper

July 29, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

There’s something magical about what happens when you add wallpaper to a space. It’s one of the quickest and most impactful ways to bring character, pattern, and texture into a room—no renovation required.

Whether you’re drawn to bold prints, subtle textures, or classic stripes, wallpaper gives you the chance to express your style in a totally unique way. In our own brownstone projects, we love using it to define a space—like creating a focal point in a powder room, adding depth behind a headboard, or giving a stairwell some unexpected flair. At our project Bedstuy Brownie, we filled the home with color by covering the walls of almost every room in bright and playful wallpapers.

One of the best parts? You don’t need to commit forever. With removable options, it’s easier than ever to add wallpaper to a space without the pressure of permanence—ideal for renters, experimenters, or anyone wanting a seasonal refresh.

Before you get started, here are a few quick tips:

  • Measure carefully and always order a little extra
  • Smooth walls and a clean surface make a huge difference
  • Don’t shy away from pattern—small spaces often shine with big prints

So if you’re looking for a weekend project with a big payoff, add wallpaper to a space. It’s the kind of detail that can turn a room from basic to beautifully bespoke.

Our First Rug Collection

May 16, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

We are so excited to announce that we teamed up with NuStory to launch our first rug collection. The Gilded Collection draws inspiration from the intricate woodwork, ornate plaster detailing, and vintage charm found in historic homes, resulting in seven distinctive rug constructions that merge heritage with modern elegance.

The collection is now available for pre-order during NYCxDESIGN week. Learn more about all of the rugs in the collection below.

Two men sitting on the stoop of a brownstone with rugs layed on the stairs and over the railings

Parlor Floor Rug

The Parlor Rug pays homage to the intricate fretwork found in historic Brooklyn brownstones. Hand crafted from premium Sardinian wool with delicate carving that highlights architectural motifs, this hand loomed rug is designed for special spaces. It is made in a curated vintage paint-inspired palette— with options in Jade, Brick, Ochre, and Ivory. Designed to bridge past and present, the Parlor Rug brings timeless elegance and rich history to homes today.

Hand Tufted Speakeasy Rug

The Speakeasy Rug offers an elevated and inspired twist on a solid bordered rug. Designed to echo the craftsmanship of intricate wood detailing, this hand tufted Sardinian wool rug features a striking geometric border that nods to the inlay flooring found in traditional brownstones. The Gabbeh dye technique enhances the rug’s depth and texture, creating a rich, timeworn appeal. Available in Burgundy and Natural, the Speakeasy Rug brings a sense of heritage and sophistication to key living spaces, blending old-world charm with modern sensibility.

Hand Knotted Study Rug

The Study Rug is inspired by the intricate wood carvings found on the doors of 19th century homes. Its geometric motifs mirror the refined paneling and ornamentation that have made brownstones so coveted for centuries. Hand knotted from wool and carefully sheered down for a soft, vintage finish and low pile, the Study Rug is perfect for offices, dining rooms, and special living spaces. Available in a muted palette of Juniper and Grey, the Study Rug bridges both traditional and modern interiors.

Hand Loomed Lounge Rug

NuStory’s Lounge Rug takes inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement and the ornate vintage wallpapers that once adorned the grand salons of NYC’s historic brownstones. Handloomed in Gabbeh-dyed Sardinian wool, this rug captures the rich patterns and layered textures of classic interiors, reinterpreted for modern living. Its ivory and navy colorways, accented with tasteful pops of color, bring depth and visual intrigue to evoke a sense of nostalgia and sophistication.

Hand Tufted Foyer Runner

Crafted from tufted Sardinian wool using the Gabbeh dye technique, The Foyer Rug is inspired by vintage woodwork and designed to bring warmth and architectural elegance to transitional spaces – like entryways and hallways. Available exclusively in a 2’6” x 8’ runner size, it is a true statement piece for the often under-decorated spaces.

Hand Knotted Tea Room Rug

The Tea Room Rug was developed from the ornate decorative molding found on ceilings and around vintage light fixtures. Hand knotted from handspun wool, this rug features a high-low texture with a raised cut-pile pattern, echoing the intricate relief work of historic plaster detailing. Its timeless design brings a sense of refinement and heritage, making it a perfect foundation for elegant social spaces.

Flatweave Bodega Rug

Drawing from the instantly recognizable design of NYC’s classic bodega coffee cup, this rug is a tribute to New Yorkers and the common experiences we know and share. Handwoven from recycled PET,  this flatweave rug offers a durable, sustainable option that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces. With its striking geometric design and vibrant contrast, the Bodega Rug makes a statement while maintaining versatility and everyday functionality.

Adding a Pocket Door

April 14, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

One of our Brownstone Boy signature design elements is the highly desired pocket door. We love adding a pocket door for a bit of historic charm, but they’re also so efficient (especially in narrow spaces like Brownstones) to maximize space and add hidden storage.

WHAT SUPPLIES DO I NEED?

First, of course, you’ll need a door, and if you don’t have an opening for one yet, you’ll need to build a casing. Once that’s done, you’ll need a hardware kit for the installation as well as hardware for the pull.

HOW TO STYLE YOUR POCKET DOOR

We love color matching doors to create a really subtle passage, however, our first love will ALWAYS be original wood. You can typically find these at salvage yards or antique shops (we highlight two of our favorites in NY in this vlog), and they really bring so much character to a space.

Spring Style Essentials

April 3, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

One of our goals for this year was to really dive into our personal styles a bit more. We spend so much time creating beautiful spaces, and we’re realizing that fashion and interior design really feed off of each other. We’ve been really working to find brands we absolutely love and that creatively inspire us, so we thought we’d share our spring style essentials!

SAMUEL ZELIG

We discovered Samuel Zelig on Revolve (which, if you don’t know, now you know, they have men’s clothing!), and we’ve been obsessed since. The jackets and pants are our favorite, and we love that these are sort of a cross between BODE senior chords and Carhartt canvas. Totally our vibe and we will be purchasing LOTS from this brand. Jordan recently wore one of their jackets at a shoot (for a very exciting project we can’t wait to share SOON), and got so many compliments on it.

TANNER FLETCHER

We absolutely loved our wedding looks but if we got the chance to be grooms again, we would absolutely include a look from Tanner Fletcher. This queer-owned couture house by couple Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell is becoming one of our favorites, combining classic tailoring with inventive departures from tradition in ruffles, ribbons, and grandeur galore. Vow renewal may be a non-negotiable just so we can slip into some organza from this brand because we are OBSESSED.

TODD SNYDER

Our tried-and true for classic, elevated daily wear is and forever will be Todd Snyder. Barry recently got a pair of pants from TS that fit impeccably well and have a subtle stripe detail. We love that every piece from this brand feels easy and comfortable but looks really elevated and chic!

How to Use Lime Wash

April 3, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

One comment we get all the time when we share the projects where we’ve used lime wash is: “Is it difficult?” The short answer…NO! Lime washing is time consuming and requires a bit more attention than a flat coat of paint, but, the results are worth it, and once you have the technique, you’re good to go! Lime wash is one of our favorite ways to add texture, create intrigue, and bring character to a space. Today, we’ll teach you how (and where) to use lime wash!

WHERE TO LIMEWASH

We get a lot of questions about whether or not you can use lime wash in spaces like kitchens and bathrooms where water is a concern. While you can certainly lime wash in these spaces, we typically opt for Tadelakt, a waterproof plaster surface (traditionally Moroccan) for things like range hoods, bathroom spaces, and backsplashes because it tends to be more water resistant. However, lime wash can certainly be used in these spaces, we just recommend properly prepping and sealing to avoid any water damage.

When water is no issue, and you’re simply concerned about whether lime wash will work aesthetically in your space, fear not! We have used lime wash in so many rooms (including our own bedroom) and have yet to be dissappointed with the result. The nice thing about lime wash is that there’s room for error and the finished look is really unique. We recommend using lime wash in rooms that get a decent amount of natural light as this will really highlight the movement in the strokes and create real depth.

HOW TO APPLY LIME WASH

STEP 1: Prep your walls! If your walls are brick, stucco, plaster, or cement that’s never been painted, simply give them a quick wipe down with a microfiber cloth & some vinegar spray and you’re good to go! For drywall and previously painted surfaces, you’ll need to apply a coat of acrylic primer before you can get to painting.

STEP 2: Get to painting! You’ll need a thick bristle brush, a drop cloth, and of course your favorite shade of paint! We love Portola for lime wash as they have the best selection of color ways and the paint is really high quality. Starting at the center of the wall, create random strokes up, down, diagonally, and side to side. Think of it as painting clouds. Move outward toward each end of the wall, and once everything is covered, let dry completely before beginning your second coat. We recommend 2-3 coats depending on the color and coverage, but the third coat is really up to your discretion!

And there you have it! Your easy two-step guide to lime wash. Make sure to tag us in your before & afters if you find this blog post helpful!

Our Spring Mood Board

April 1, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

One thing we’ve been trying to do with each season is create a new mood board to tie together ideas, goals, and projects. It’s been fun both from a design and lifestyle perspective to take an inventory of things we’re loving, what we’re not feeling anymore, and what themes we want to thread through each of our projects. Something we love as designers is seeing our evolution over time, but also seeing what we were feeling drawn to on the whole that made its way into our projects. We’re going to try to share more of them each season so that we can look back on this and remember what was inspiring us! Let’s dive into our spring mood board!

COLOR DRENCHING

It should come as no surprise by now that we are PRO color drench. However, we’ve felt ourselves shifting away from blue tones recently which were our favorite over the last year. We’ll always love a good blue room, but more recently we’re feeling ourselves drawn to moody neutrals like Douter or Olive from Farrow and Ball. We love the way pairing these with a creamier tone can create a sort of dark academia vibe, especially alongside leather furniture, stone tables, and walnut wood. Bringing together the natural elements alongside a natural color really grounds the space with lots of depth.

STRIPES EVERYWHERE IS THE MOOD

We’re most definitely in our striped era–from the curtains we repurposed on the Today Show with Jenna & friends to the shirts we bought at Todd Snyder a few weeks ago, we cannot get enough! We love how stripes add a fun, playful element to both designs & fashion that somehow feels classic and simultaneously cheeky. Plan to see more striped drapes, shirts, and wallpapers from us SOON…

HARDWARE THAT SPARKS INTRIGUE

We have begun to think of hardware as the jewelry of the home. While it isn’t a necessity the way pants or plumbing are, it really elevates the overall look and feel. We’re loving hammered brass and oblong shapes, anything that feels more artistic than practical (even though yes, you can have both!)

Our Spring Sale Favorites

March 28, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

If you’re looking for a few easy, affordable upgrades to make in your home this spring, look no further! We’re rounding up all of our favorite little luxuries while they’re on sale this week and sharing our spring sale favorites so you can bring your home into full bloom.

LIVING ROOM

To freshen up your living room this spring, try a thinner throw, a colorful coffee table book, or a new vase for easy arrangements. We love these library lights to add a little dark academia to your space and really highlight vintage art pieces!

KITCHEN

In the kitchen, we’re changing out our hardware for a fresh new look. Hardware is such an underrated way to update a space and can be really cost effective! Right now we’re loving oblong shaped hardware, brass, and stone!

bathroom with large white tub and whoer wet space, green and white tiles alternate to create a stripe pattern, custom vanity to right with fluted detailing and large mirror above

BATHROOM

In your bathroom, one of the easiest ways to make a space feel new and clean is to replace your old ratty towels with some plush new ones! We also recently swapped out our disposable soap dispensers for refillable glass and it really upgraded our bathroom space. For privacy, we added this privacy film to our window that happens to beautifully diffuse the light in our primary. Lastly, if you’re looking to treat yourself, this towel warmer is on our list for lovely little things to make our lives better.

BEDROOM

We just upgraded our bedroom, and one of the things we’re doing immediately is ordering these cordless chargers to eliminate the power cords at our side tables which drive both of us insane. We’re also grabbing this air purifier because allergies have been unreal, and replacing the light bulbs in our chandelier with smart bulbs so we can switch to red light after 8 PM (it’s allegedly SO much better for your circadian rhythm, time will tell).

How to Create the Perfect Media Center

March 27, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

If you, like us, are television and movie lovers who want to enjoy a flick from your couch but don’t want your living room to scream, “We watch television here!” You’re in the right place. It can be so hard to find and style the right console table for your room, and even more difficult to create the perfect media center that is equal parts cozy and chic. Let’s get into it!

Bright blue den and office space with white bulb lights, built in desk and wooden chair

How To Choose The Right Console Table

Choosing the right console table is perhaps the foundation of the entire media center. While some may opt for a built-in (which typically, we love) we’ve found that having the freedom to rearrange our living room outweighs the draw of a built-in media center for us. In the past, we’ve used traditional console tables with no storage beneath for a minimal look, (love this option too), but recently we’ve also grown fond of the idea of using a credenza as a media center if space allows. We bought the Frame TV a few years ago and never looked back–and over a credenza, it looks like a beautiful art piece and thoughtful cabinetry rather than the T.V. and a place to keep all the stuff you don’t want out on shelves. If you’ve got limited storage, this is a great option for you!

Projectors Vs. TV’s

One thing we’ve been loving recently is the shift toward projectors instead of televisions. As previously mentioned, we love our Frame TV so we won’t be swapping it for a projector any time soon, but we recently used ours during our Parlor Floor renovation to watch White Lotus Szn 3 (can you believe that last episode!?!?!?!) and it was actually so lovely. We love how people have been concealing their projector screens with removable wall art and roll-down screens for a look that is very demure.

How to Refresh Your Primary Bedroom

March 26, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

Our primary bedroom is probably the room in our house we’ve changed most frequently since we moved in in 2018. One could argue that this is because we’ve been much more intentional with other projects in our home, and of course, because the space that is mostly just for us comes last. We decided this year that we would reinvest some of the design skills we had garnered, along with fresh inspiration from recent travels to The Pig in Britain back into our own space. We began with our Parlor Floor, which you can catch updates of on our YouTube, but when we saw Farrow & Ball’s latest collection, we knew we had to pour some love into our bedroom. We decided to go for an English Countryside-inspired room with a modern twist; bold color on the walls, layered textiles on the bed, and lots of pattern throughout. We’re so happy with how it turned out, and we’re going to show you how to refesh your primary bedroom in three parts!

Primary Bedrooms Don’t Have To Be Boring

That doesn’t mean you have to go as bold as we did when it comes to a color, but we certainly encourage it! We opted for Farrow & Ball’s Duster on the walls–a warm, cozy ochre yellow that, to us, feels like. warm hug. That being said, you can absolutely choose a neutral color without making it boring. We toyed with the idea of Scallop in this room & also just recently finished a primary bedroom at our New Heights Reno project that featured a creamy grey hue from Portola that brought in beautiful texture with a lime wash finish. If you go bold with the walls, try neutral toned bedding, or sleek classic furniture to balance the scales. If you opt for a neutral, bring in texture, pattern, and intrigue in other elements like side tables.

Choose Your Bedding Wisely

One thing we will never skimp on when it comes to quality is bedding. We’re always big fans of Brooklinen, but the woven checkerboard duvet set we went with was next level. We chose to layer it with their Luxe Sateen Core sheet set, Sara Hand Printed pillow shams from Soil to Studio, along with not one but two quilts from Soil to Studio as well to give our bed a really full, layered look. When shopping for bedding, we suggest choosing textiles with complimenting colors and a variety of textures to really bring a cozy vibe to the room. We opted for a mix of florals and more modular, modern patterns for a nice juxtaposition between traditional and trend.

Furniture Is Harder To Change…

So we decided to choose classic pieces we feel can grow and change with the room if we ever decide to swap out styles. One of the best things we did when we first redid our bedroom years ago, however, was purchasing the Esme Bed & slipcover from Sixpenny. When it came time to refresh our bedroom, changing out the previously gray slipcover for a ‘New Leaf’ (no pun intended) was seriously the easiest part of the entire makeover. Headboards can play such an integral role in the overall design of a room, so to us, having the freedom to change colors and textures with ease is a major plus. For the other furniture in our room, we opted for a mix of vintage and new, with two vintage side tables, a reupholstered chair by Ruti at Find The Thread using House of Hackney fabric that we are absolutely obsessed with, alongside the Laurent dresser by our forever favorite, Arhaus.

Don’t Forget To Accessorize Your Primary Bedroom!

Once you’ve picked out your paint, layered your bed, and finalized your furniture, it’s time to get down to details! We brought a little more warmth into the space using a mixture of vintage art and fresh florals alongside a tea table from Rejuvenation, custom drapes by Kelley at Picnic House Drapers, modern side lamps, the Price Rug from Rejuvenation, and a chandelier from Rejuvenation. We love how this room turned out and already feel more inspired upon waking each day!

What to Give a New Home Owner

March 6, 2025 by The Brownstone Boys

We recently heard a phrase that really stuck with us, “Homes have souls, too.” Nothing could be more true! The soul of a home lies in the art of it–the linens on a table, height etchings on a wall–the things and the lives we create within their walls that make them ours. Now, we’re not suggesting that you can wrap all of that up into a single house warming gift, but we think approaching it from this point of view can help narrow it down when there are SO many options. We’re breaking it down and showing you exactly what to give a new home owner to help them add a little soul into their home.

BRINGING WARMTH INTO THEIR SPACE

When we think of home, we think of a place where we feel warm, safe, and seen. The most obvious way to bring warmth into a space would be through flame, making a candle one of the most common housewarming gifts. While we’re not knocking the tried & true, we are suggesting you push a little further out of the box by thinking about warmth as a color, a texture, or a feeling of familiarity. Vintage items (like this print from 1stDibs (which by the way, is offering 40% off through mid March storewide) are a great way to warm a space through all three. Vintage colors & textures tend to feel worn, and as such, add a lived-in look to any space. Natural stone, though cool to the touch, has a grounding & earthly affect in a space that will simultaneously elevate & root the room’s style, so pieces like this sculpture make a great gift. When in doubt, we opt for a bespoke textile or a personalized piece of art.

GIFTING TOOLS TO MAKE MEMORIES WITH

At least one person in your life prefers an “experience” to a physical gift, but we firmly believe you can kill two birds with one stone in this case. Try to put yourself in their home a month, a year, or ten years from now. What would they like to experience within their home in that time? Perhaps they’d love to host a pasta making night with friends, watch the birds fly around a feeder in their backyard, wave to their neighbors from a bistro set where they drink their morning coffee each day, or be the house on the block most known for its funky mailbox. If you don’t know the person well enough to know what type of experience they’d most desire, go with everyday luxury. Encourage them to find meaning in the mundane with a fancy olive oil, an invigorating soap, a plush pair of slippers, or a beautiful wind chime.
