Elevating Your Home: How Hardware Updates Make a Big Impact

When it comes to renovating or elevating a home, the big ticket upgrades like new floors, bold wall treatments, or custom built-ins tend to steal the spotlight. But sometimes, it’s the smallest details that tell the biggest design story.

Hardware might seem like an afterthought, but it plays a starring role in how a space looks and feels. From cabinet knobs to door levers, drawer pulls to bathroom hooks, these are the finishing touches that add polish, personality, and a sense of intentionality to every room. At Gates House, we added vintage crystal door knobs to give the home another layer of character. Additionally, at our projects such as Carroll Jardin and Dream in Fort Greene, we intentionally chose kitchen hardware to compliment the paint colors and cabinets.

Why Hardware Matters

In historic homes like the brownstones we work on, the magic is often in the mix: period details paired with modern updates, patina layered with shine. Hardware is one of our favorite ways to bridge the old and the new. A well placed unlacquered brass knob can nod to the past, while a matte black pull feels current and elevated. These pieces don’t just serve a function, they create a feeling.

Our Go-To Tip for Instant Elevation

If you’re looking for one of the simplest ways to refresh your space without taking on a full scale renovation, look to your hardware. Swapping outdated or mismatched pieces for cohesive, quality options instantly brings clarity and style to a room.

We always recommend thinking about finish, form, and function.

Finish: Choose one or two finishes that complement your home’s palette and era. Brass, nickel, matte black, and antique bronze are all timeless options.

Form: Don’t shy away from sculptural or unexpected shapes. Hardware can double as art.

Function: The best design is beautiful and usable. A good pull should feel satisfying in your hand.
